Meknes the important economic pole

Meknes
Meknes (Moroccan Arabic: مكناس, translit. məknas‎; Standard Moroccan Tamazight: ⴰⵎⴽⵏⴰⵙ‎, translit. amknas‎; French: Meknès; Spanish: Mequinez) is one of the four Imperial cities of Morocco, located in northern central Morocco and the sixth largest city by population in the kingdom.

Founded in the 11th century by the Almoravids as a military settlement, Meknes became capital of Morocco under the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismaïl (1672–1727), son of the founder of the Alaouite dynasty.

Sultan Moulay Ismaïl turned Meknes into an impressive city in Spanish-Moorish style, surrounded by high walls with great doors, where the harmonious blending of the Islamic and European styles of the 17th century Maghreb are still evident today.

The urban population is estimated to be more than 650,000 with the metropolitan population growing to a million. It is the seat of Meknès Prefecture and an important economic pole in the region of Fès-Meknès.

Merzouga the small desert

Merzouga

Merzouga is a small village in southeastern Morocco, about 35 kilometres southeast of Rissani, about 55 kilometers from Erfoud, and about 50 kilometers from the Algerian border.

The village is known for its proximity to Erg Chebbi, a Saharan erg, and it is for this reason a part of the itineraries of many tourists visiting Morocco

Merzouga has the largest natural underground body of water in Morocco.

In 2006 Merzouga experienced devastating flash floods, displacing 1,200 and resulting in some deaths.

Near the dunes of Erg Chebbi there are some other known villages: Hassilabied 4 km away, Tanamoust 3 km away, Takoujt 1.5 km away, Khamlia 7 km away and Tisserdmine 15 km away.

Merzouga is a small desert town on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a mesmerising sea of wind-blown Saharan sand dunes.

It is the gateway to the wilderness of the desert interior, and the perfect place to get a taste of Bedouin life.

Camel treks are the easiest and most authentic way to explore the surrounding landscape, where knife-edged dunes and blazing blue skies create the classic Saharan backdrop.

Chefchaouen the blue Moroccan city

Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen or Chaouen (Arabic: شفشاون‎‎ Shafshāwan (pronounced IPA: ʃəfˈʃɑˑwən); Berber: ⴰⵛⵛⴰⵡⵏ Ashawen) is a city in northwest Morocco

It is the chief town of the province of the same name, and is noted for its buildings in shades of blue.

Chefchaouen is situated in the Rif Mountains, just inland from Tangier and Tetouan

The city was founded in 1471, as a small fortress which still exists to this day, by Moulay Ali Ben Moussa Ben Rached El Alami (a descendant of Ibn Machich and Idris I, and through them, of the Islamic prophet Muhammad) to fight the Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco.

Along with the Ghomara tribes of the region, many Moriscos and Jews settled here after the Spanish Reconquista in medieval times.

In 1920, the Spanish seized Chefchaouen to form part of Spanish Morocco

Spanish troops imprisoned Abd el-Krim in the kasbah from 1916 to 1917, after he talked with the German consul Dr. Walter Zechlin (1879–1962). (After defeating him with the help of the French, Abd el-Krim was deported to Réunion in 1926.)

Spain returned the city after the independence of Morocco in 1956.
